Wine into deadly water

Posted in ODD Blogs on May 2nd, 2006

Bobby Fetzer, part of the Fetzer family that started Fetzer winery on the North Coast of California, drowned Sunday while rafting. The family sold the winery in 1992 to Brown-Foreman, one of America’s largest companies in the spirits business. Brown-Foreman is the home of famed Kentuckian, John Daniels. Bobby Fetzer was 50 years old at the time of his death. He had 10 brothers and sisters, which leads we ODDfellows to conclude that the elder Fetzers didn’t just toil in the vineyard. Oh, Fetzer drowned in spite of wearing safety gear.
“Wine is constant proof that God loves us and loves to see us happy.”

ODD day of economists, skis, and dead presidents

Posted in ODD Blogs on May 1st, 2006

Well, the months of waiting with building immense tension, excitement, and excruciating uncertainty has passed. Yes ODDfans, the NFL draft is over.

If you’re thinking of buying that Power Ball ticket today, you might think about having 97 in it. The two departed today made it to that exalted age. Economist, diplomat, and lover of lobster stew, John Kenneth Galbraith died abroad in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Galbraith was characterized as, “The most widely read author on economics.” Okay, out there, name one of his books. Anyone, anyone, Beuller, Beuller?

Bill Kirschner didn’t write no stinkin’ book. He invented the fiberglass ski. If you’ve ever skied on a pair of K2’s, their roots go back to Kirschner (although the skis are now made in China.)

Anyone care to weigh in on who had the greater impact on life, Galbraith or Kirshner?

And here is your nasty Lyndon Baines Johnson quote-of-the-day on economics:
“Did you ever think that making a speech on economics is a lot like pissing down your leg? It seems hot to you, but it never does to anyone else.”
