Stop Clowning Around

Posted in ODD Guests, Movies & TV, Media on December 4th, 2006

The NY Times reports by way of the Associated Press that Emmett Kelly, Jr passed away. Young Mr. Kelly followed his father Emmett Lee Kelly aka “Weary Willie” into the clown business. The Times reports that “In 1960, with the makeup and blessing of his father, Mr. Kelly made his clown debut at the Circus Festival in Peru, Ind. Four years later, Eastman Kodak signed him to appear at the New York World’s Fair.” Kelly died at age 83 at his home near that famous Arizona resting place of Tombstone, aka “The Town too Tough to Die”.

Now somewhere in our ODDly short-circuited memory lies images of one Hobo and one Kelly of a different sort in Hobo Kelly who had her own LA-area TV show in the late 1960s and early 70s. Thanks to the article from TV Acres we found out that Sally Baker (aka Hobo Kelly) believed that “children need to be taught consequences”. Can I get an AMEN?

And this just in…Lindsay Lohan seeks help for her alcoholism. Mayhaps Lindsay, Mel Gibson and Courtney Love could open a clinic together? Ménage à Trois anyone?

Surfing With The Alien

Posted in ODD Guests, Music, Movies & TV, Arts, Media on December 1st, 2006

In the Any Publicity Is Better Than No Publicity category first time novelist Iain Hollingshead and his novel “Twentysomething” have won the Bad Sex in Fiction Award. Mr. Iain was presented the award by none other than Courtney Love. Yes the same Courtney Love who told People Magazine that “Mel Gibson Helped Me Get Sober”. Ummm, yeah, sure Courtney. Too bad there wasn’t some sort of typical Hollywood romance, wedding and divorce involved. That would have been one glorious train-wreck.

While We Were Out News
We missed this one: Dave Cockrum, the comics illustrator who popularized the X-Men died at age 63. Without Dave the ODDones would have never learned to read surely. (About our writing (or lack thereof) why you’ll just have to take that up with our high school English teacher Mrs. Hale.) Seems the X-Men were created in 1963 by comics pioneers Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, but the idea never gained ground with the comic buying public. Cockrum and Len Wein turned the concept around and published “Giant-Size X-Men No. 1″ in 1975.

Also of interest in the LA Times article is this: “The family has asked that, instead of flowers, donations be made to the Hero Initiative, a fund assisting comics creators in need. For details, go to http://www.heroinitiative.org.”

And yes as a matter of fact we did know that “Surfing With The Alien” is the title of a Joe Satriani disc.

And finally a shameless plug: surf yourself over to Oddica and get your family some new apparel this season. Fake Legal note: Oddica is in no way related to ODD, but they do have a really catchy name, eh?

Rock Baby Rock

Posted in ODD Guests, Music, History, Media, Business on November 30th, 2006

Just in time for Christmas from those crazy Canadians in Leader, Saskatchewan - a calendar that shows them posing nude in the potholes of their main road. Order early an often.

We received word from Caustic Truths that OurDailyDead.com has been added to their web site links. Accepting the award for ODD is our happy bit on a death in a Korn mosh pit. Korn is that fun loving band that can decided between heavy metal and mental heaviness aka religion. Thanks Caustic!

Our buddies at the LA Times report that Robert ‘H-Bomb’ Ferguson has died at the age of 77. The Times informs further that ol’ H-Bomb was the bluesman and pianist who urged listeners to “rock baby rock” at the dawn of the rock ‘n’ roll era. Another Christmas thought - you’ll find Ferguson and others featured on this five disc box set: “Atomic Platters: Cold War Music From the Golden Age of Homeland Security”

And Heather over at Dooce seems to have found quite the bargin, eh?
