Sin-y

Posted in ODD Blogs, Religion on January 5th, 2007

Nude calendars are becoming de rigeur it doth seem. Now we’ve such a calendar depicting male members of a church in New York. The New York-based Sacred Center Church decided a nude calendar would be just the thing to draw attention to the church’s financial need.

All of the models in the calendar are members or congregants of SCNY (perhaps pronounced SIN-y?) and are committed to daily spiritual practice such as prayer, meditation and the reading of spiritual texts.

And just in case you missed this point altogether we note that the Sacred Center Church web site says “It’s not your parent’s church”. True enough and at least Elizabeth Clare Prophet is not involved, nor are the church members off in Montana triumphantly building bomb shelters and terrorizing the bison.

Next up is an ODDones Nude Calendar…NOT!

Big

Costal Redwoods379.1 and counting. Tall tree hunters Chris Atkins and Michael Taylor recently discovered the new world record holder for tall trees. Hiking about the remote corners of Redwood National Park these two naturalists discovered three Sequoia Sempervirens trees that appeared to be taller than the (now) previous tall tree record holder. The aptly named Stratosphere Giant held the record at 370 feet (and still growing) until the newly discovered trees could be measured.

Of course one does not simply get out the ol’ measuring laser and sight in the highest leaf. The only accurate way to measure such a giant is to wander up to the tippy-top and drop your measuring tape down to the ground. But climbing in this case had to bide a bit until the nesting season for the endangered marbled murrelets was done and over. Only after was the measuring accomplished and the truth known. 379.1 feet…and counting.

Dr. Stephen Sillett Professor and Kenneth L. Fisher Chair in Redwood Forest Ecology at Humboldt State University - a recognized expert in these trees - verified the measurement.

A couple interesting points about Hyperion: one is that unlike other Coastal Redwoods giants of its kind Hyperion is located on a steep slope rather than in a creek bottom. And second it seems that Hyperion escaped the chainsaws that used to haunt its neighborhood. Thank the Carter administration for redrawing the National Park boundaries to include Hyperion’s neck of the woods.

Fish Wrap

Posted in ODD Blogs, Not One Of Us, Fish Wrap on December 18th, 2006

Um, what? I keep banging my head, but I’m not getting anywhere.

News of the Weird as found in our local ODD newspaper (yes, we still partake of that quaint tradition whereby a real paper is delivered (mostly) into our ODD Galactic Empire HQ (see below) driveway): two clowns who trespassed onto railroad property and climbed onto a boxcar to check the view were severely burned by a 12,500 volt line also atop said boxcar. They sued of course claiming such was in no way their fault and that the railroads did not do enough to stop them from tresspassing. They won about $12M in compensatory damages and another $12M in punative damages. The Editors here conclude that the railroad did in fact err and should have turned the voltage all the way up.

The 'Dancing House' in Prague ODD Galactic HQ - aka the Dancing House in Prague.

And since we are in the way of scratching our collective heads and our Talking Heads we’d like you to consider these fine newspaper headlines.

File this under Wrap Up: Nude Christmas card photo perhaps?

Guitar Lessons

Posted in ODD Blogs, Music on August 29th, 2006

Damn: Ex-Napalm Death Guitarist Jesse Pintado Dies. So much for guitar lessons…double damn.

Seems to us after no end of tail-chasing that our fav commercial these days stars none other than Honest Abe. Dare to dream indeed even if the drug companies push their products much like televangelists push theirs. Maybe there is a connection there….and while you are sleep deprived might as weel read a bit from the folks who write for Ad Freak.

Power Hour: somehow or other we were picked up by Caustic Truths.com. Give ‘em a wee look, eh?

And how could we let today go past without some type of post? Certainly you are all dressed up and ready for Michael Jackson’s birthday, non? Nice of him to leave the country, but he forgot to take Mel and Tom with him. Likely there should have been a busload.
