Geraldine Ferraro

Geraldine Ferraro, New York politician and first woman nominated as Vice-Presidential candidate by major political party. In 19841984 Ms. Ferraro was Walter Mondale’s running mate in an which they lost to Ronald Reagan and that other guy (can you remember?). She also ran twice, but unsuccessfully, for the United States Senate.

Boris Gudz

Posted in ODD Guests, History, Politicos on January 7th, 2007

Boris Gudz died in Moscow on December 27, 2006 at the tender age of 104. Boris Gudz was not only the oldest living Soviet spy, he was also the last surviving participant in Trest (операция “Трест”), one of the most brilliant counter-intelligence operations in espionage history, that lured the celebrated British agent Sidney Reilly among many others to their doom. Lessons for the KGB.

The Russian-born Reilly - said to have been an inspiration for Ian Fleming’s James Bond and later known as “the ace of spies” - was an extraordinarily colourful figure: businessman, womaniser, and inventor of bizarre schemes to overthrow the infant Soviet state. He was lured across the Finnish border, captured and taken to Moscow, where he was imprisoned at the Lubyanka prison.

Reilly was later shot in Sokolniki Park on November 3, 1925 supposedly on direct order from the ever tender Stalin. Gudz had only a modest role in all this playing a courier for Eduard Opperput, one of the Russian agents responsible.

Hanging Around No Longer

Posted in ODD Guests, History, Politicos on December 31st, 2006

Saddam Hussein

Saddam Hussein is dead by hanging. Everyone’s favorite news source Al Jazeera had this quote on the main page:

“This is a time when Muslims in particular are supposed to be forgiving, are supposed to be closer to God. Why are they using this occasion to take revenge? They couldn’t wait one more week?”

Now granted Saddam was no angel and his punishment just under Iraq’s laws…but the timing of the execution is certainly curious.

And from the Jerusalem Post we find this story about a hot new travel destination

Do you wonder about the post Saddam hanging conversation between W and his daddy? “Got him Daddy” comes to mind.
